What Goes Up, Must Come Down

Lake Michigan water levels do fluctuate.  They were at a super-low point in the 1960’s, rose to a high in the mid-1980’s, came back down, and today (2021) and since about 2019 have been at another high.  In some locations the beach remains, in others the water comes up to the shore protection.  Shore protection–what’s that?.  To avoid erosion of the land owners install shore protection.  Most often this is placement of large rocks, known as rip-rap, and in some cases people are able to install a steel sea wall.

At 6576 Highway 57 in Jacksonport even over the shore protection the water is rather shallow, maybe a couple of feet, the lake bottom sandy.  A few years ago this owner had sandy beach, and that will surely return again at some point.

The sand comes and goes too.  If the water is high there will be less sand on the lake bed, when the water goes down the sand will come back in and sometimes as much as two or three feet deep.

So, if you are buying a Lake Michigan home the rise and fall of the water and sand is something you should be aware of and enjoy.
