What are the best things to do in Door County this winter? The temperature says winter has arrived in Door County. No snow yet—but winter. Read on for some of my favorites winter things to do…
You may think of Door County as a warm-weather destination, and that is very true for so many. But winter, quiet though it may be, offers an abundance of outdoor activities for the active, and if you prefer indoors you’ll find lots of cozy lodging, delicious dining, and spectacular shopping.
The Fish Creek Winter Games have been a Door County winter staple for lots of years. Food, fireworks, games in the snow and on the ice are highlights of the first weekend in February. Unfortunately in 2020 due to COVID the Fish Creek Winter Games will not take place. Head to Fish Creek anyway for a more quiet weekend.
Early Door County settlers found ice fishing a necessity for survival. Today it’s a favorite winter recreation. Door County locals have ice-fishing shanties that dot the ice-covered lakes and bay—almost creating little fishing villages. If you are visiting, you can hook up with a Door County fishing guide to experience a winter fish yourself.
Hiking, snow shoeing, cross country skiing among the beauty of Door County preserves and parks are great daytime pastimes. Before the snow flies, hike. When we have good snow there are many groomed trails for skiing and snow shoeing.
Ridges Sanctuary – 1600 acre nature preserve and five miles of trails.
Peninsula State Park – 3776 acres and 16 miles of trails. Nor Door Cyclery is located just across the street and there you can rent snow shoes and cross country skis.
At Whitefish Dunes State Park, with the highest sand dune in the state of Wisconsin you can rent snow shoes. Weather permitting Whitefish Dunes holds candle-light ski nights.
Maybe sledding in in your kid’s bucket list. Hill 17 at Peninsula State Park will satisfy anyones sledding thrill.
A Warm Drink After All That Activity
After all that outdoor activity you might be just in the mood for a warm drink.
Cherry Creme, Raspberry Butter Crunch, and Caramel Pecan Scone coffee, along with a lot of other flavors, and just plain old coffee, can be found at Door County Coffee and Tea, and even some Door County hot chocolate.
You might try Tea Thyme in Sister Bay and its Door County Cherry, Winter White Earl Grey, and Jasmine Green.
In every town and village you’ll find a favorite coffee shop, or maybe a local tavern where you can enjoy a Hot Buttered Rum or Tom & Jerry.
