Baileys Harbor History
Located on 68.8 square miles of land, this town is named in honor of a Great Lakes captain by the name of Justice Bailey. He was placed in danger by an unexpected and severe storm in 1848. Luckily, he made his way to the harbor and was safe from the storm. While he was there, he gathered samples of rock and wood from the area and took it back to his employer. In time, Bailey Harbor became the county seat for Door County and the lighthouse was built in 1851.
