Like so many of the Door County towns and villages, the name of the town for municipal purposes, but locals and visitors alike use the common name, Fish Creek. The downtown of Fish Creek is very walkable and filled with eateries, shops, and galleries. A couple of blocks off the quaint downtown you’ll find the waterfront with its amazing view to Peninsula State Park and Chambers Island. The northern Door County area (the northern part of the town of Egg Harbor and to the tip-of-the-Door is served by the Gibraltar School District.
The school district is comprised of approximately 600 students–give or take depending on the year and serves grades k-12.
Fish Creek History
Recorded as the first settler in Fish Creek, Increase Claflin originally settled in Sturgeon Bay in 1935. Though he is noted as the first settler in Fish Creek, Asa Thorp is easily the most recognized. By 1953, Asa Thorp owned most of the land around the area and was selling cord wood to Lake Michigan steamers. Thorp harvested the wood from his land and sold it from a pier that he built.
One of the historic must-see sites in the area is Claflin Point, the site of Increase Claflin’s cabin. The cabin is located within the 3,700 acres known as Peninsula State Park. When you visit, you’ll find it easy to see why those first settlers chose Fish Creek as their home. This area remains as beautiful today as it was in days past.
Fish Creek Parks & Recreation
If you feel like a bit of quiet contemplation is in need, make your way to the Peninsula State Park for a tranquil bike ride on one of their well-maintained trails. The park features sand beaches and nature trails. If camping is your passion, you’ll want to make reservation early to make sure you have a spot during camping season.
Nicole Bay Beach is located within Peninsula State Park. A favorite spot for campers and visitors for the day.
The Eagle Bluff Lighthouse Museum is inside Peninsula State Park and features original furnishings from the Duclon family’s time serving as lighthouse keepers. The beam from the lighthouse reached out over 16 miles and kept many boaters safe after the Civil War.
Fish Creek Public Beach is open to the public and is located on a half-acre of land. A perfect spot for swimming, the beach features play equipment for children and has portable restroom facilities available. If the idea of enjoying the beautiful blue waters on a sunny day sounds appealing, you’ll want to pack a lunch and head out to this public beach for a day of fun.
Living in Fish Creek
Fish Creek is well-known for the artistic and creative people who call it home. The Peninsula Players make their home in Fish Creek. They are the country’s oldest professional summer theater. You’ll also find the American Folklore Theater, the Door Community Auditorium, and the Peninsula Music Festival here. There are plenty of year-round opportunities to explore the arts in Door County.
