What makes Jacksonport a don’t miss place to visit in Door County? The sandy beaches, rocky shorelines, and tallest sand dunes in the state are just a few of the natural attractions.
Whitefish Dunes State Park and Cave Point Park are right next to each other. At Cave Point, you can stand on the escarpment to see the waves crash against the sea caves below you. At Whitefish Dunes, you can climb the highest sand dune.
Visit Lakeside Park to enjoy a day of swimming and take a look the shipwreck marker on site. South of town, Schauer Park features a boat ramp. Meridian Park is exactly halfway between the equator and the North Pole.
If you enjoy hiking, you’ll want to visit Ridges Sanctuary at Logan Creek. This park has 170 acres of hiking trails that wind through wetlands and wooded areas.
The Polar Bear Swim is held each New Year’s Day and is sponsored by The Jacksonport Polar Bear Club. Swimmers take an icy plunge into Lake Michigan, and you may find it unbelievable, but they actually say that it’s refreshing. This event has taken place each year since 1986. Hundreds of people come to jump into the freezing water and thousands gather to watch.
Maifest kicks off summer on Memorial Day weekend with a parade, music, food, and a softball tournament. People come from far and wide to visit the art fair and experience the fun of midway activities and the horse pull. There are concessions, a car show, and a 10-K run.
The Cherry Festival takes place in early August and celebrates the harvest of the county’s red cherries. This event is sponsored by the Jacksonport Historical Society. The festival features an art fair, a penny hunt, helicopter rides, a raffle, live music, and a car show. Visitors can also tour the restored root cellar at the Erkshire Rest Area.
